MANILA, Philippines - Filipina-Mexican Jessica Sanchez failed to wow the “American Idol” judges with her essay of the Gloria Estefan hit “Turn the Beat Around” on performance night held Mar. 14.
Saying that the “rhythm was a little shady,” rock icon Steven Tyler initiated the string of unsatisfactory comments about Sanchez with, “I don’t think you should stray too far from what you do the best, which are ballads.”
Pop diva Jennifer Lopez candidly admitted that though Sanchez did a “good job,” she nevertheless said that it's “not her favorite” performance of the young singer.
She noted that Sanchez’s “strong vibrato,” or the musical effect consisted of pulsating change of pitch, worked to her disadvantage in the song.
“Your voice has such a strong vibrato, which is so beautiful on certain songs but on a song like this, it’s really where you have to be syncopated and on that beat and it lagged a little bit behind so it lost a little bit of the energy,” Lopez pointed out.
She also advised her that it doesn’t have to be about “sounding great” all the time, but “it’s about just having the rhythm" in order to "kill" the song.
Third judge Randy Jackson, meanwhile, said the dance tune wasn’t a perfect fit for her.
“The problem for me was the song choice. You got a big old voice but the song didn’t allow you to show that. Not that you have to show it every time but pick something that you can really play with and make your own,” he said.
Jackson even underscored that being “one of the greatest” in this season; they have to “stir” her to the right direction by giving “constructive criticisms.”
In response, Sanchez confessed that singing the 1994 hit proved to be a “bit of challenge” for her.
“I had to work really work hard to make my voice fit this song. It was a bit of a challenge but if I stay, next time I’ll pick a better song,” she told host Ryan Seacrest after the judges’ commentary.
This week’s theme for the performances was songs from their birth year. The said song came out in 1994, the year Sanchez was born.
The critiques that Sanchez received this week from the three judges were a far cry from the ones she’s got last week while performing the Whitney Houston hit “I Will Always Love You,” where she even got a standing ovation.
Fans of Sanchez, though, will have to wait for the results night, which will air on Mar. 15 [US Time] to see if she would make it to the next round

MANILA, Philippines — Jessica Sanchez inched closer to “American Idol” title after advancing to the Top 12, as announced on reality show’s season 11 on March 8 (March 9 in Manila).
Jeremy Rosado was voted out, leaving Hollie Cavanagh, Colton Dixon, Heejun Han, Skylar Laine, Phillip Phillips, Deandre Brackensick, Erika Van Pelt, Joshua Ledet, Shannon Magrane, Jermaine Jones and Elise Testone with Sanchez in the running for next week’s round of performances.
The Filipino-Mexican contestant of AI 11 earned another standing ovation from judges Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson during the show’s performance night held March 7.
The Top 13 tackled Stevie Wonder (boys) and Whitney Houston (girls) catalogs for their pieces.
Sanchez’s rendition of Whitney’s “I Will Always Love You” earned her the highest praises from the judges.
“Jessica Sanchez is legit. Let me tell you something. This is one of the hardest songs in the world to sing. You not only are the best vocal of the night, I think you are one of the best singers of this whole competition. Oh my God!” Jackson said.
Lopez, seemingly overjoyed by the 16-year-old singer from California, urged the audience to cheer some more for Sanchez.
“Just, just amazing. I don’t even know what to say. I’m speechless. I’m speechless when you did those last three little things, we were right there with you,” she said.
“I think you were even surprised that you were sobbing. I was like, oh my God! That was when I felt Whitney. Oh my God yes! It was beautiful Jessica! You are so talented. God bless you!” Lopez exclaimed.
Steven Tyler, on the other hand, aired his fearless forecast. “Jessica... you may be the one. You just made 40 million people cry.”
Jennifer Hudson, who sang “I Will Always Love You” as a tribute to the late Whitney Houston in this year’s Grammy Awards, reacted positively to Sanchez’s performance.
“Yes Jessica! That’s it!!” the “Idol” alum posted on Twitter.
Before the show ended, host Ryan Seacrest asked the judges to name their top two performances. It came as no surprise that Sanchez was a constant pick on their list.
Claiming how Sanchez owned the night’s performances, Tyler said: “My favorite stand-outs of the night were Jessica Sanchez... and Jessica Sanchez.”
Meanwhile, Sanchez is also the top pick of a US magazine to win this season’s “American Idol.”
Entertainment Weekly named her the number one on the “Power List” for this week, followed by Phillip Phillips and Skylar Laine. Colton Dixon and Joshua Ledet complete the Top 5

First Fil-Am to have real shot at ‘Idol’

If Filipino-American Jessica Sanchez gets the boot on “American Idol” in the next few weeks, it would change not only the famous reality talent show, but world history as we know it.
That’s because the three judges – Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson – virtually handed Jessica the crown after her rendition of “I Will Always Love You” during the show’s Whitney Houston-Stevie Wonder smackdown on Wednesday (Thursday in Manila).
All three jurors gave the petite 16-year-old a standing ovation – as they had done last week after she performed a flawless “Love You I Do,” from the movie “Dreamgirls.” Randy called her “legit.” J. Lo said Jessica left her “speechless.” Steven surmised that Jessica “made 40 million people cry.” Tears of joy, he apparently meant.
The usually cranky web site “Vote for the Worst” conceded that it “was one of the best non-VFTW vocals in at least a few years.”
But VFTW thought she “may have been lip-synching.” Or it could have been a touch of ventriloquy, since she hit the last high note while smiling coyly. This launched a hot trending topic/debate in cyberspace: Autotune vs. Reverb vs. Backup Vocals.
Secret code
Funniest quip on VFTW: “When Jessica is tapping the microphone, do you think that’s a special secret code for people who live in Manila?”
This early, VFTW is predicting a showdown between Jessica and hard-rockingcountry boy (and pawnshop employee) Phillip Phillips in the finale. AI Season 11 has “become so predictable it’s not even funny,” VFTW complained. J. Lo foretold “a sing-off” between two girls (Jessica and Hollie Cavanagh, 18).
Phillip was rushed to the hospital recently; would that spell good or bad news for J-haters?
